Rally and Walking Tour Details

Meet up at the corner of Echo Avenue and Huguenot Street in New Rochelle. Map link is here.

The walking tour will go in a circle that returns to Echo and Huguenot. Along the way we will learn about the history of the pre-revolutionary war African American community of Pugsley Hollow and how it was subjected to numerous environmental hazards before being demolished to make way for I95 and the commercial district. We will stop at the site where the gas tanks to light up New Rochelle's first street lights were buried. Using historical maps and photos you will learn how redlining, zoning and urban renewal destroyed a community.

Throughout the tour and at the rally speakers will share information about environmental justice and available tools and resources which can help residents advocate to undo the harm being done by environmental racism.

This action is part of the continued effort to stop drive-thru businesses being placed adjacent to any residential housing. We believe that the City Council's June 2021 special zoning resolution to allow a drive-thru Starbucks adjacent to residential housing can and must be rescinded.
